If you’ve ever been interested in France or French culture and cuisine, you’ll love hearing about my recent experiences on the French Riviera. This charming area in the South of France has always held a special place in my heart. I first became interested in it when I was a little girl and fell in love with old French movies starring glamorous actresses. Something about the “joy of living” (joie de vivre) that the people have there appeals to me. So let me take you on a magical journey through some of my favorite places in France.
Exploring the Canal du Midi in Sète and sampling local specialties like bouillabaisse in Marseille
My adventure started with the cruise ship arriving in Sète. What a fantastic place where the Canal du Midi meets the Mediterranean Sea. I was lucky to spend one night at one of the city’s best-rated hotels, where the staff went out of their way to treat me like royalty. Then, full of excitement about what lies ahead, I headed toward Marseille.
From there, I hopped on a ferry to Chateau d’If – a fantastic island fortress that used to be a prison. Today it’s one of Marseille’s most popular tourist attractions. After exploring the island, I enjoyed a sunny stroll along La Corniche – a seaside promenade with unbelievable views of the city skyline as the sun sets over the Mediterranean Sea. They say no trip to Marseille would be complete without trying the city’s famous dish, bouillabaisse. They’re absolutely right! This seafood soup is cooked in broth and seasoned with saffron, fennel, and other herbs – it was absolutely delicious!
Provençal flavours in Saint-Tropez
My journey continued in the famous Southern French coastal town of Saint-Tropez, one of the first places you probably associate with the French Riviera. The exclusive atmosphere of the city is emphasized by the yachts moored in the harbor glinting in the last rays of daylight, and the cafes were bustling with people enjoying drinks and conversation. I caught myself smiling in the reflection of Ladurée’s window as I thought about how lucky I was to be here again and finally find the time to unwind, relax, and fully indulge in my well-deserved vacation.
The foodie I am, and with my diet currently on hold, I came prepared and read a lot about the numerous elite restaurants before starting my trip. So I couldn’t wait to finally sit down at one of the lovely little restaurants and try the famous Mesclun salad, a traditional blend that includes arugula, chervil, oak leaf, and lamb’s lettuce. I consider myself a Gourmet, and I could immediately tell how fresh, rich in flavors, and colorful the leaves were.
It was the authentic experience I hoped for, and my expectations exceeded. I savored every bite, enjoying the warm evening breeze while listening to a French chanson in the distance.
As the next day rolled in, I remembered my local friend Madeleine highly recommending checking out Crêperie Grand Marnier to try one of their world-famous crepes. Supposedly the best in town (some say the best in the world), I surely didn’t want to miss out on that experience and headed towards Rue des Remparts. For the simple joy of reliving childhood memories, I opted for Nutella, served with a smile and a touch of humor; it was just as expected; perfectly crisp and warm.
After a long day of exploring the picturesque streets, it was slowly but surely time to continue my journey and say goodbye, or rather à bientôt Saint-Tropez!
The most luxurious Yachts at the Cannes Yachting Festival
I arrived in Cannes the next day, just in time for the yearly Yachting Festival; every September, the French Riviera city plays host to one of the world’s most prestigious yachting events – The Cannes Yachting Festival. An occasion for anyone who loves luxury yachts, sailboats, and all things maritime and wants to connect with some leading industry experts. However, what I found most enjoyable was when I got to go for a ride on one of these magnificent vessels. There’s something mesmerizingly peaceful about being out on serene water; it felt like I was in another world while listening to the ice cubes clink in my Rosé.
I decided to spend the late afternoon walking along the famous promenade La Croisette which made me feel like I was blending in with the classy French women in my newly purchased floral silk-blend maxi dress. The fashionable people strolling along palm trees with the sound of the waves in the background make it a great spot to watch people and find (fashion) inspiration.
Taking a dip in the Mediterranean Sea in Nice
After the many breathtaking impressions of the last few days, I was ready for a day of pure relaxation and wellness on the beach. And what could be better than spending some time off at a private beach in the South of France?
Ideally located along the Promenade des Anglais, Plage Beau Rivage welcomed me with a stunning view of the azure blue ocean just in front of me. I could choose between a sunbed or parasol before basking in the sun and flipping through the latest issue of the French Vogue for the rest of the day. This is what I call savoir-vivre, which means living a rich and fulfilling life and knowing how to make the most of every opportunity.
A bit overwhelmed with the large selection of Plage Beau Rivage’s restaurant menu, I gladly listened to my waiter’s recommendation when it was time for dinner later that day.
Despite France’s reputation, I was impressed with the fantastic customer service. After a few moments of indecisiveness, I went for grilled Mediterranean seabass with provencal herbs. While waiting for the food to arrive, enjoying a glass of ice-cold Champagne, I glanced at my neighbor’s mouthwatering dish of choice; Beef carpaccio with sprinkles of Parmesan and classic French fries.
Crème brûlée is always a welcome dessert, right?! The one I ordered here definitely hit the spot! There’s something about its rich, creamy custard and crisp caramelized sugar topping that feels indulgent. Maybe it’s because it’s often reserved for special occasions. Whatever the reason, there’s no denying that crème brûlée is a luxurious treat! I was satisfied to end my day with such an unforgettable experience in a vibrant atmosphere.
Breathtaking views of the Mediterranian Sea in Monaco and Glamour in Monte Carlo
Monaco, a wealthy Principality on the French Riviera, oozes luxury, from superyachts in the harbor to big-name designer shops and Michelin-starred restaurants. Located on a cliffside just outside the city center is the Jardin Exotique, which was on top of my list of places I wanted to visit, and it did not disappoint! This unique garden offers breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea. An ideal place to
stroll or picnic on a warm, late-summer afternoon. After spending most of the day at this lush place, I felt revitalized and made my way to Quay Jean Charles Rey, a scenic place to end the day with a drink overlooking the quay and enjoy a magnificent sundowner.
My last stop a few days later was Monte Carlo, which is more than just wealth and extravagance. A certain allure and sophistication emanate from the city, which is why it’s no surprise that so many people, myself included, are drawn to it. I enjoyed a spectacular view on a helicopter ride overlooking the Côte d’Azur and ended it with a fabulous dinner at Monte Carlo Casino.
This was the end of my enchanting vacation in the South of France. I still dream about strolling along the French Riviera, feeling the warm sun on my skin and the gentle breeze in my hair when I think back to all my wonderful memories. I have traveled a lot in my life, but nowhere else has left me with such a unique and luxurious feeling as on the Côte d’Azur.
