From a young age, I was fascinated by the stories of my father’s journeys to Morocco. As a result, I often dreamed of being whisked away to a faraway land where I would have adventures beyond my wildest imagination. As I grew older and finally got to explore the Northern African country myself, I realized this wonderful place was just as magical as I imagined it as a child. The vibrant souks, the locals’ incredible Hospitality, the peaceful moments of rest, and indulgence for both mind and body while relaxing at the Hammam – Morocco is an enchanting country.
A Shopper’s Paradise: The Best of Marrakech’s Souks
My father always said that you could not fully grasp the essence of Marrakech unless you visit the souks at least once in your life. This is undoubtedly true! So this was on top of my bucket list, and I couldn’t resist the pleasure of booking a private tour with a very knowledgeable local guide named Omar. This turned out to be an excellent decision, as getting lost in this colorful maze on your own is easy.
I learned that Omar had been offering these tours for over 15 years, so it quickly became apparent that the local artisan community highly respected him. He led us briskly into the depths of the souks and tailored the tour to our interests. As soon as I entered this vivid market, with its crisscrossing, winding streets, and alleys lined with stores and stalls, I was involuntarily captivated by the various goods on display: a unique combination of shapes, colors, lights, shadows, smells, and sounds, where the most incomparable, unimaginable objects lie close together until they almost merge.
I was particularly fascinated by a pharmacy where we were shown how the owner mixed different oils and spices. A stroll through the souks offers a glimpse of life in Morocco centuries ago. You can find everything from handmade lanterns to spices and teas here. Thanks to Omar, I was confident enough to negotiate an excellent price for a beautiful hand-woven rug.

The Moroccan Tea Ceremony: A Cultural Experience
At the end of our tour, Omar invited my husband and me to his home. He told me it would be an absolute must to participate in a traditional tea ceremony and said that his wife prepares the best tea. He explained that the process is very important and each step must be followed correctly to make a perfect cup of tea. I was intrigued by this cultural experience and accepted the offer graciously to partake in the ceremony.
He explained that Mint Tea is the country’s most iconic and popular drink, enjoyed by people of all social classes, whether on a hike, in the desert, or at home. Omar’s wife, Amira, welcomed us warmly, and we experienced the wonderful Hospitality of the Moroccans. It was heartwarming and reminded me why I love traveling and learning about foreign cultures.
Completely mesmerized by Amira’s skills, I watched her as she added a bunch of fresh mints and sugar to the pot with boiling water. Then she explained to us the importance of pouring the first glasses back into the pot so that the flavors can circulate and the bitterness of the tea can be mitigated. I enjoyed the sweet, hot tea while listening intently to Omar’s captivating stories. He told me how drinking tea reminded him of his childhood and gave him a sense of comfort and security. I felt very honored to have been invited to share such a culturally rich experience with kind and welcoming people.

The Morrocan Hammam: The Ultimate Relaxation Experience
Before we boarded our long-haul flight, we were eager to enjoy an authentic hammam experience. Thanks to our new local friends, we knew which one was the best spa in town and would, therefore, exactly meet our high expectations. The place had an incredibly calming and luxurious effect on me, like a sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of Medina. A magical place to relax and let all worries be forgotten.

Jamila, one of the dedicated and very attentive staff, gave me a full body scrub with a Kessa glove and black soap; according to her, one of the secrets of Moroccan women for maintaining the softness of their skin. Afterward, my skin felt baby-soft, and I was even offered delicious mint tea and tasty biscuits while another employee prepared the next room for my facial and full body massage – Dounia performed it, and I can honestly say it was the best massage I’ve ever had. Then, wrapped in moisturizing and fragrant argan oil, I was ready for the final treatment – a rose petal bath – everything was beautifully presented and thought out to the smallest detail. My husband and I have visited many spas worldwide; this one is by far the best we have ever experienced, and we knew we would come back for sure!
Although we were sad to leave Marrakech, we were excited to share our stories with friends and family. As we packed our bags with heavy hearts and said goodbye to this amazing city and its wonderful people, I already started planning our next trip back. There is so much more to explore in this mystical place, and I can’t wait to be back.
